Railway revenue earnings up 6.65 per cent in April- September 2009

Indian Railways' revenue earnings grew 6.65 per cent to around Rs40910.49 crore on an originating basis during the first six months of the current financial year (April-September 2009-10) against Rs38,358.16 crore earned during the same period of the previous fiscal.

Total earnings from goods traffic have gone up 5.84 per cent to Rs27,631.32 crore in April-September 2009 from Rs26,106.68 crore in April-September 2008-09.

Total revenue earnings from passenger transport increased 7.61 per cent and stood at Rs11,573.91 crore at the end of the first six months of the current financial year, compared with Rs10,755.10 crore in the same period of the previous fiscal.

Revenue from other coaching rose 16.60 per cent to Rs1,115.81 crore in April-September 2009 against Rs956.97 crore in the same period last year.

The number of passengers booked during April-September 2009 rose 4.50 per cent and stood at around 3,685.03 million in April-September 2009 against 3,526.31 million during the same period last year.

In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during April-September 2009 were 1,888.51 million and 1,796.52 million, respectively, against 1,879.87 million and 1,646.44 million in the same period last year - an increase of 0.46 per cent and 9.12 per cent, respectively.
