Railways' earnings up 3.34 per cent in April-May

The total earnings of the Railways on originating basis stood at Rs13,708.88 crore in April-May 2009, compared to Rs13,265.63 crore during the same period last year, showing an increase of 3.34 per cent, agovernment release said.

Total goods earnings have gone up from Rs9,126.99 crore during April-May 2008 to Rs9,340.39 crore in April-May 2009, an increase of 2.34 per cent.

Total passenger revenue earnings during first two months of the financial year 2009-10 rose 5.35 per cent to Rs3,831.00 crore from Rs3,636.57 crore during the same period last year.

The revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs396.36 crore during April-May 2009 compared to Rs357.85 crore during the same period last year, an increase of 10.76 per cent.

Total approximate number of passengers booked during April-May 2009 were 1,203.71 million compared to 1,155.34 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 4.19 per cent.

In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the number of passengers booked during April-May 2009 were 600.59 million and 603.12 million compared to 601.05 million and 554.29 million during the same period last year, a decrease of 0.08 per cent and an increase of 8.81 per cent respectively, the release added.
