Railways to hire 23,000 to fill 10% EWS quota: Piyush Goyal

24 Jan 2019

Indian Railways, which is on a hiring spree to fill 2,82,976 vacant posts, is planning to hire 23,000 candidates from the newly sanctioned 10 per cent quota for the economically weaker sections of the population.

Currently, Indian Railways has a sanctioned strength of 15,06,598 employees, of which 12,23,622 personnel are on the rolls, leaving 2,82,976 vacant posts. The Railways on 23 March announced a massive recruitment drive to hire about 2.30 lakh people in the next two years. Following the 103rd Constitutional Amendment, 10 per cent of the vacancies, ie, around 23,000 vacancies, will be reserved for candidates from economically weaker sections, railway minister Piyush Goyal said.
The 2.30 lakh people to be hired, are in addition to the hiring of 1.5 lakh employees now under way, and is expected to be completed by April.
“These recruitment drives will fix long-standing issues. With the increase in investment in Railways, recruitment needs have also increased,” Goyal added.
Even after the current drive to recruit 1,51,548 people gets over, 1,31,428 posts will be vacant. It is estimated that about 53,000 and 46,000 employees will retire in 2019-20 and 2020-21 respectively, creating about 99,000 additional vacancies.
“Therefore, after accounting for the current recruitments in progress, there will be total net vacancies approximately of 2,30,000 employees in the Railways over the next two years,” the minister explained.
The recruitment will take place in two phases. The first will be initiated in February-March 2019, while the second cycle is targeted to be completed by April-May 2020. Of the total 2,30,000 vacancies, about 34,000 posts will be reserved for SC candidates, 17,000 for ST candidates, 62,000 for OBC candidates and 23,000 for candidates from economically weaker sections.
The minister also said that Railways is extending services of 22 pairs of trains across the country. “All these extensions have been planned by utilising the lie-over periods of the existing trains at their respective terminating stations. These extensions will help in more gainful utilisation of coaches and will augment revenue of Indian Railways," he added.
