Railways to set up 18 medical, 7 nursing colleges

The railways is looking to greatly improve its medical facilities by using the public-private partnership model, minister of state for railways K H Muniyappa told the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

Indian Railways proposes to establish 18 medical colleges attached to existing railway hospitals through PPP, Muniyappa said in a written reply.

These colleges would be at Chennai, Hyderabad, Bilaspur, Lucknow, Barasat, Bhubaneshwar, Mysore, Kharagpur, Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Jodhpur, Gardenreach, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, B R Singh Hospital Kolkata, Bhopal, Jammu and Thirvanthapuram.

Similarly, seven nursing colleges would be established attached to existing railway hospitals. These would be at Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai (Kalyan), Chennai, Secunderabad, Lucknow and Jabalpur.

The railways also propose to set up a training institute at Dankuni (West Bengal).

The minister said first aid facilities are provided for passengers in all long distance trains. The first aid box is available with the guard of the train. A proposal to depute a doctor on a few long distance trains stopping at just a few stations is under process, he added.

He said in addition, augmented first aid boxes with wider range of medicines, disposable medical material etc have been provided with the train superintendents of Rajdhani / Shatabdi Express trains and guards of other nominated trains.

The frontline staff -  train superintendents, conductors, and travelling ticket examiners - are also trained in first aid measures.
