Reliance Communications launches cheapest tablet PC

10 Aug 2011

Kicking off a price war in the personal computer tablet space, Reliance Communications has launched the cheapest tablet - Reliance 3G Tab - priced at Rs12,999. The tablet, custom built for Reliance network, has been sourced from China's ZTE Corporation.

BlackBerry (PlayBook), Apple (iPad), Samsung (Galaxy), Dell (Streak), Motorola (XOOM) and homegrown telecom firms like Spice and Olive are others telecom firms to have launched tablets in the country.

Reliance 3G tablet is being shipped with a 7-inch touch screen and Android 2.3 operating system. It has a 512 MB RAM, a micro SD external storage and weighs 389 grams. The device is comes pre-loaded with a number of applications and is Wi-Fi-enabled.

Reliance Communications is also offering a free 4GB SD card, but, customers can upgrade the memory up to 32 GB.

''Reliance Communications has always been a pioneer in taking bold steps to innovate and re-invent the telecom ecosystem in the country, and has always believed in bringing products to Indian customers that fulfill their needs and desires with incredible affordability. The launch of Reliance 3G Tab is in line with this principle. We believe the unmet demand of a fully loaded tablet at an aggressive price point will now fuel the aspirations of the evolved customers,'' RCom president Mahesh Prasad said.

In a study last month, global information technology research and advisory firm Gartner Inc said chief information officers should be experimenting with media tablets as they present a variety of new opportunities for businesses.

Gartner expects media tablet shipments to be about 69 million in 2011, which is only a small fraction of the total number of application-capable mobile devices, such as smartphones.

Launched in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata, Reliance 3G Tabs would be available in Reliance World and Reliance Mobile stores across the 13 3G circles in the next few days.

Reliance 3G Tab is also being launched with bundled data service plans and discounts of up to 50 percent.

In comparison, one of the cheapest tablets is Olive Pad priced at Rs 14,500, while high-end devices such as iPad2 costs Rs 39,500 a piece.

Motorola's XOOM, available in two variants, are priced at Rs34,490 for the Wi-Fi version and Rs 41,490 for the 3G version, while BlackBerry PlayBook is priced between Rs30,000-40,000 depending on the variant (16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB).
