Reliance in Top 2 ''Overall Leadership'' amongst Indian companies

20 Dec 2003

Hong kong: Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) for the fourth year running continues to rank at No.2 in 'Overall Leadership' in the Far Eastern Economic Review's (FEER) annual company survey, the Review 200: Asia's Leading Companies 2003. For the past 7 years in a row, since 1997, Reliance has continued to be amongst the top 2 companies in this criterion. Infosys Technologies maintained its top position.

In the other leadership categories Reliance is ranked No.2 amongst Indian companies in 'Long Term Vision', 'Financial Soundness' and 'Companies That Others Try To Emulate'.

Reliance improved its ranking to number five from its eleventh rank last year in 'Innovative in Responding to Customer Needs' category.

The Review 200 notes that 'The same five companies as last year, in the same order, occupy the top five slots this year' as 'Company Leaders' which highlights the impenetrability in ranks. It further states that 'The top two firms represent two key elements (home-grown technology and world-class infrastructure) of India's rapidly growing economy, which is set to expand by 7% in the year to March 2004'.

'Reliance has shown a talent in rolling out world-class infrastructure, whether in oil-refining or telecommunications, part of a resurgent industrial sector', states FEER.

The survey, now in its 11th year, was conducted by ACNielsen International Research (Hong Kong) and included more than 150 multinational corporations, which were chosen based on their market capitalisation and the strength of their presence in the region.
Respondents were asked to rank companies using a scale of one to seven on their overall leadership performance. Those who did not recognise a company's name gave that company a score of zero. They were also asked to indicate which of the following criteria applied to listed companies:
· high quality services or products
· management with a long-term vision
· innovative in responding to customers' needs
· financially sound
· a company that others try to emulate
