27 May 2011

Tata Motors announced today that its Land Rover Freelander 2 SUV would be assembled as a CKD rather than a CBU at their new plant near Pune which has led to a significant drop in prices.

With the price cut, the new ex_Mumbai prices of the Freelander are Rs33.89 lakh, for the SE Variant and Rs40 lakh HSE Variant. The S variant has been dropped.

The SE is powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine that delivers 150 bhp along with a healthy torque figure of 42.8 kgm. The HSE variant comes with the same engine but producing 190 bhp.

Both variants have standard terrain response and GPS.

In conversation with journalists at the plant inauguration today, Carl Peter Forster, group CEO, Tata Motors and Dr Ralf Speth, CEO, Jaguar Land Rover, said that they were in discussion with the government over the duty structure.

They added that transmissions assembly in India did not make sense and by assembling the Freelander in India they were trying to make their cars more accessible.
