Samsung Electronics' US subsidiary yesterday acquired medical-image producing machines maker NeuroLogica, as part of the South Korean electronic giant's plan to expand into the  medical equipment business.

Samsung Electronics America acquired Massachusetts-based start-up portable computed tomography (CT) scanner maker NeuroLogica, for an undisclosed amount.

Founded in 2004, NeuroLogica develops cutting-edge medical imaging products and is known for its world-class portable CT scanners, such as BodyTom and CereTom.

Adding NeuroLogica to the company is "another important step" in expanding Samsung's medical imaging business, Samsung said in a statement. "Samsung will continue to strengthen its capabilities and product portfolio to establish itself as a trusted leader in the health and medical equipment industry," it added.

The Seoul-based company had in 2010 said that it would invest 1.2 trillion won ($1.1 billion) through 2020 in the healthcare equipment segment.

In late 2010, it  acquired a 43.5 per cent stake in Medison Co., a South Korean diagnostic ultrasound manufacturer, for $292.2 million, and last year acquired US-based healthcare equipment maker Nexus, for an undisclosed price.
