Samsung expands patent fight with Apple in Germany

Samsung Electronics on Friday filed four more patent claims against rival Apple in Germany, in addition to the three other cases of alleged patent infringement filed against the US company.

Korea-based Samsung has already started trial proceedings against Apple in a German court over three other patents that the iPad maker has allegedly infringed.

Two of the patents are related to WCDMA telecommunications standards, while the other two are related to "the utility of mobile devices," like the 3G mobile handsets, Samsung said in a statement issued today.

One of those four patents relates to how "smileys" are entered into mobile phones.

Samsung said it has developed technologies and protocols "for the efficient and reliable functioning of telecommunication networks and devices."

"While Samsung has at all times met its obligations to the fair licensing of its telecommunications standards-related patents, Apple has infringed by using without license Samsung's intellectual property in its mobile devices," the company said.

Trial proceedings on the earlier three patent cases are going on and the verdicts are likely to be out early next year.
