Samsung to set up manufacturing unit in Sriperumbudur
18 Nov 2006
Mumbai: Samsung Electronics is setting up its second Indian manufacturing complex in Sriperumbudur, Chennai, at an estimated cost of around $100 million. The company, which has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of Tamil Nadu, will set up the facility over the next five years.
Samsung currently produces colour televisions, colour monitors, refrigerators and washing machines at its existing manufacturing complex at Noida.
"The growing demand for our products in southern India, the strong infrastructure available in the region, coupled with its proximity to the port, and the Tamil Nadu government's investor-friendly approach are the factors that prompted us to set up this complex in Chennai," said R Zutshi, deputy managing director of Samsung India Electronics.
The project would manufacture colour televisions, colour monitors, refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, printers and other technology products in the first phase. In the second phase, the company proposes to enhance production capacities.
"We expect to manufacture our advanced LCD TVs and LCD monitors in this complex as well," he added.
Construction work on the new facility is expected to commence in December 2006, with commercial operations slated to begin in August 2007. On completion, the new facility will provide employment to 2,500 people, Zutshi said.
