Shanghai General Motors will recall 47,415 of its 2012 model year Chevrolet Aveo vehicles over faulty brake fluid sensors, China's top Chinese quality regulator yesterday said.

Shanghai GM, a joint venture between General Motors Co and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp, will recall 47,415 of Chevrolet Aveo vehicles due to a suppliers defect in the sensors, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said on its website.

The regulator said that the alarm system built into the brake fluid reservoir could fail to alert drivers of low brake fluid levels.

Shanghai GM will contact Aveo owners and will rectify the defect for free.

Shanghai GM manufactures and sells Chevrolet, Buick,Cadillac, and Opel brand vehicles in China.

Detroit, Michigan-based GM saw record sales in China in March and April, despite a slowdown in the world's biggest car market.

For the first four months of the year, GM's China sales rose 9.4 per cent year-on-year to 972,369 units.
