Siemens makes India’s first single phase 500MVA HVDC transformer

Siemens Ltd. has manufactured the country's first single phase 500MVA high-voltage direct-current transmission technology (HVDC) transformer at its Kalwa factory.

The transformer is the largest rating transformer ever, as other local manufacturers have produced a rating of only one-third till now. It will form a bank of 1500MVA and will be used in the HVDC transmission system to efficiently transmit bulk power over long distances.

A K Dixit, CEO, energy sector, South Asia, said, ''HVDC transformers are state-of-the-art products contributing to the green initiative of Siemens. Today we are dispatching the highest rating of HVDC transformer manufactured in India.''

The transformers will be used for Adani Power Ltd project where Siemens is currently constructing a bipolar 2500 megawatts HVDC system planned to be commissioned early next year. The system with the converter transformers from Siemens will have the capacity to transmit bulk power of 2500MW over 900 kilometers from a power plant near Mundra to the industrial regions of Haryana.

Seimens facility, inaugurated in 2007, has a capacity of manufacturing transformers totaling 15,000 MVA annually.
