The Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has awarded an order for construction of a new rolling mill for long products at its Durgapur facility to a consortium of Siemens VAI Metals Technologies and Shriram EPC, Chennai.

SAIL is boosting capicity at its Durgapur unit in West Bengal so as to start production from mid-2012. The new mill is scheduled to produce one million tonnes per annum of structural steel.

Siemens VAI Metals Technologies is part of the German industry solutions division of Siemens AG.

The new long-product rolling mill at Durgapur, while expanding SAIL's production capacity for structural steels, would also make available a range of products, including, round and square bars, angle and channel sections and beams of up to a maximum dimension of 300 mm.

The mechanical equipment of the rolling mill comprises the descaler for billets and blooms, rolling stands, cooling table, straightener units and a cold cutting area. The rolling line will also have systems for stacking, strapping, weighing and labelling the end products.

Siemens is also supplying the complete electrical equipment, including medium and low-voltage transformers, and the low-voltage distribution system.

The order also includes main and auxiliary drives, motors, motor control centers (MCC), the uninterruptible power supply, basic and process automation, operator control and visualisation systems, an intercom and a CCTV system.
