Sony India has launched its new Walkman W series of mp3 players targeted at the younger generation. The company is aiming to capture the largest share of the mp3 player market in India by next year. Currently it enjoys a 20 per cent market space.

''We aim to achieve a market share of 30 per cent in the estimated 9-lakh units in the Indian MP3 market. To achieve this, we will keep launching more innovative products and expand our sales network. We are also planning an aggressive strategy for the purpose,'' said Masaru Tamagawa, Sony India's managing director.

The company's sales last year stood at around 85,000 mp3 players.

Sony India will also increase its retail outlets to 3,000.  Tamagawa said, ''Our products are present in around 1,000 outlets across the country which include Sony centres, multi-brand stores and other modern retail.''

The company has hiked its marketing investment to Rs10 crore for the current year. This money will go toward promotions, and online and outdoor campaigns.

The wireless Walkman W series sports a colourful design and the module fits behind the ear. While display option is not provided, the Zappin feature facilitates searching and browsing functions. The Jog Dial feature allows a short snippet of songs to be played for letting the listener select the required song.
