Buoyed by strong growth in its smart phone and television business, consumer electronics and, with about Rs5,500 crore coming in from the sale of mobile devices alone, technology giant Sony is confident of garnering revenue of Rs12,000 crore in India in the current financial year.

The Japanese manufacturer announced this at the launch of its SmartBand SWR10 fitness tracker in the Indian market, alongside the Xperia Z2 smart phone, in New Delhi on Thursday.

The wrist-worn device will be available in the country in the third week of May, and will be priced at Rs5,990.

SmartBand SWR10 is a waterproof device (despite the uncovered micro-USB port) and tracks the wearer's physical, social and entertainment activities. Data like the number of steps taken during the day, sleep patterns, and calorie intake are recorded by the device. It also wakes up the user when they have completed their usual sleep cycle.

The smart band also collects data about the music the user has listened to, photos they captured, games they played and friends they communicated with to track their entertainment activities.

It also works in conjunction with the Walkman app for Android to let users control music on their smart phones via the gadget.

The fitness tracker does not have a display, but transfers all the activity and communication data via NFC and Bluetooth using the LifeLog app available on Google Play Store. When this app is active on a smart phone, SmartBand SWR10 will vibrate to notify the user of any call or message they have received.

Sony India, which sells products like televisions, audio systems, smart phones and cameras, among others, had reported revenues of Rs8,000 crore in India in the financial year ended 31 March 2014.
