REpower, the overseas arm of Pune-based wind power major Suzlon Energy Ltd, has entered into a contract with C-Power of Belgium for supply of 295 MW turbines for its offshore wind farm Thornton Bank.

Companies from Belgium, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Denmark are involved in the project at Thornton Bank.

The total investment, including refinancing of the first phase project, amounts to around 1.3 billion euros ($1.72 billion), making it the biggest offshore wind power project in Europe.

A consortium of seven commercial banks together with the European Investment Bank is providing approximately 900 million euros ($1.19 billion) in financing for the project, the biggest project financing in the offshore wind industry, Suzlon said in a release today.

The installation of 24 turbines is planned for 2012 under phase 2 of the project while the remaining 24 will be installed during phase 3 by mid-2013.

"We are extremely delighted about the trust once again put in REpower. The fact that we have been chosen as turbine supplier for the next two phases of the first Belgian offshore wind farm shows that the client is convinced by the quality and reliability of our offshore technology, proven in phase 1," Andreas Nauen, CEO of REpower Systems AG, said at the occasion of the formal signing in Antwerp.
