Tata Communications to provide Wi-Max services in tie-up with Telsima Corp

Mumbai: Tata Communications Ltd, part of $29-billion Tata Group, has picked US-based Telsima Corp to provide wireless broadband services in India.

Telsima is a global player in Wimax systems.

Wimax technology uses fixed, local radio cells to provide high-speed wireless internet access, and is considered a successor to wireless fidelity (wi-fi) technology. Citywide wireless internet platforms are implemented through Wi-Max.

In the initial phase, Tata Communications will offer broadband Internet access and content services to business and residential customers in all the major cities in the country.

Shankar Prasad, president of Tata Communications' retail business unit, said, ''Telsima will provide Wimax infrastructure and subscriber equipment solutions to deploy our commercial Wimax network, which will have 3000 base station sectors, currently being deployed.'' The Indian broadband market currently serves 3.1 million customers, and is forecast to grow significantly.
