Tata launches Jag, Rover in India

Tata Motors Ltd on Sunday launched the marquee Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles in India. The company had bought the brands from Ford Motors last year. Both cars will be imported as fully built units.

Jaguar is launching the XF amd XK range of luxury coupes and convertibles in India starting at a price tag of Rs63 lakh and going up to Rs90lakh. Land Rover will initially launch three vehicles, including the Range Rover Sport and Land Rover Discovery 3, with prices also starting at Rs63 lakh but going beyond Rs90 lakh.

The cars are considerably more expensive than what they would cost in the UK because of the high duties levied by the Indian government.

Calling it a momentous occasion for the company, chairman Ratan Tata said, "This is in keeping with our desire to extend the penetration of the brands in India.''

Tata said the arrival of Jaguar and Land Rover was a memorable event in the "context of our history and heritage" and also marked a new dawn for the company, whose image had been damaged during the economic downturn.

"The perception [of Jaguar Land Rover] is wrong. They are two terrific brands and as an Indian I feel very proud to have these brands with us. Together we can take them back to the glory they had over the years," he said.
