Tata Motors moves Supreme Court against Calcutta HC order

28 Jun 2011

Tata Motors today moved the Supreme Court today challenging Calcutta High Court's refusal to accept its plea for an interim stay on the return of land at Singur allotted for its Nano plant.

Stating that it was an exceptional case, the court said if the land was distributed to farmers, it would be irreversible. Their plea would be heard by the court tomorrow.

In an earlier statement, the company spokesperson had said that Tata Motors Limited would raise the matter before the Supreme Court as per the country's legal procedure.

The Calcutta High Court yesterday declined to grant an interim stay on the plea of Tata Motors Limited, which was apprehensive that land in Singur would be distributed to the unwilling farmers from Tuesday.

In the Singur Bill that was passéd, Ms Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, has accused the Tatas of "non-commissioning and abandoning" their project.

Disagreeing strongly with this, the company had said in a statement earlier this month that the operations of setting up and commissioning of the plant was conducted under very difficult conditions, amidst violence. It added that there being no guarantee of a safe and peaceful environment, Tata had to reluctantly close operations on 3 October, 2008.
