Tata Motors to set up bus, truck assemblies in SE Asia, South America

Tata Motors, the country's largest commercial vehicles maker, is planning to set up bases in South East Asia and South America for manufacturing trucks and buses.

Tata Motors' president for commercial vehicle business Ravi Pisharody said the company has already started assembling trucks at its South Africa facility.

"We are looking for land in Latin America and South East Asia," Pisharody told reporters on the sidelines of an event to celebrate the silver jubilee of the company's highly successful light commercial vehicle 'Tata 407'.

The mini-truck enjoys 75 per cent market share in the category, he said.

"Launched in 1986, the Tata 407 family clocks 7 out of every 10 vehicles sold in the category with a close to 75 per cent market share. About 55 per cent of its owners are first-time users, indicating the self-employment it generates, a goal pursued by the Tata Group and Tata Motors," the company said in a release.

"We are grateful to our customers who have acknowledged our understanding of their needs and our engineering capabilities. We will continue to add new features to the range matching customer requirements," managing director for India operations, PM Telang, said.

"The 407 is exemplary in how a platform can be deployed to meet diverse needs. It today addresses a wide range of goods transportation and people movement solutions, industrial and defence applications in India and in about 15 other countries in South Asia and Africa," Pisharody added.
