Mumbai: Tata Steel is expected to soon restart work at the proposed six-million tonne steel project at Kalinga Nagar. The government has given an indication to this during a presentation before Investment Commission head and Tata Steel chairman Ratan Tata, official sources said.

A government report on the progress of several proposed projects before the Investment Commission said that construction of the boundary wall at the project site that was stopped due to law and order problems would recommence soon.

As per the memorandum of understanding, signed between Tata Steel and the government, an estimated 2,400 acres of land were to be allotted to the company. However, lease deed has been executed only for 1,971 acres so far.

About 150 families have been shifted to rehabilitation sites. Shifting of another 1,100 families to will be taken up in phases, the report said.

Work at the project site had come to a halt in January after violent protests that left 13 tribals dead. Thirteen tribals, who were part of a group that opposed the Tata Steel project fearing displacement of locals, were killed in the police firing on 2 January, 2006.
