TataSky launches India’s first 4K set-top box

In the run-up to the forthcoming Cricket World Cup, the direct-to-home (DTH) operator TataSky yesterday launched India's first 4K set-top box (STB) offering better picture clarity, PTI reported.

TataSky set-top boxTataSky said subscribers could book their 4K set top box for Rs6,400 while existing subscribers could avail of the box at Rs5,900, enjoying it as their first connection or an additional STB at home with the Tata Sky MultiTV connection option.

In addition to relaying the 4K content, the box would showcase standard definition and high definition channels.

TataSky 4K, a new generation STB is capable of delivering ultra high definition picture quality and Dolby digital plus 7.1 surround sound, PTI reported. 4K at 8.3 megapixels had around four times the pixels as that of 2K the current HD standard tech2 reported.

Tata Sky, the first direct-to-home (DTH) service provider demonstrated the first 4K broadcast in India, during the Germany vs France Quarter-final tie at the FIFA Football World Cup 2014 tech2 reported.

Subscribers could buy a brand new 4K set-top box or use Tata Sky's multi-TV connection option. In addition to 4K content, the STB can showcase SD as also HD streams. The 4K STBs could also be pre-booked using the Tata Sky 24×7 helpline, Tata Sky website and through dealers.

With the ICC Cricket World cup beginning next month, it would be the right time for Tata Sky to capitalise on the 4K frenzy and the debut during last year's FIFA Football World Cup 2014.

However, it would now be up to the TV channels to start offering 4K streams and Tata Sky had not mentioned any 4K-ready channels with it planned to start off
