TCIL, Corus to explore possibilities of joint servicing of global accounts

10 May 2010

Tata Steel associate company, Tinplate Company of India Ltd (TCIL), in which the steel major holds a 45-per cent stake, is exploring joint servicing of some global accounts in association with Corus' tinplate making facilites in Europe.

Tarun Daga, managing director, TCIL said the companies had been working together for the last few years in two-three areas. He added that in operations they were sharing and improving on the best practices at facilities both in India and in Europe.

TCIL would, under the arrangement work with Corus' tinplate units in Europe towards promotion of tinplate in India and selling TCIL's own tinplate to big accounts like Crown Holding, the multinational that makes beverage cans.

Compared to TCIL's tinplate making capacity which stands at 3.8 lakh tonne per annum (ltpa), Corus (now Tata Steel UK) which was taken over by Tata Steel in early 2007 has a tinplate making capacity between 12ltpa and 15ltpa located at its UK and Holland plants.

TCIL would also be leveraging Corus' technology for use in making high quality tinplate beverage cans in India for the domestic beverage industry.

TCIL, in association with Corus is conducting research in the area of tinplate development according to Daga.
