Telenor to help recycle 7.8 million surplus mobile phones

06 Mar 2013

Norwegian telecommunication company Telenor has launched a clean-up drive to recycle mobile phones that are lying unused with users.

Telenor quoted a recent survey to show that over half of the people in Norway have at least two old mobile phones that are lying idle in a drawer.

Telenor has now teamed up with local sports clubs, numbering about 550, to collect these mobile phones, estimated at 7.8 million, and recycle them to newer phones.

"These old handsets simply pile up in our rummage drawer. Sports clubs all round Norway are now collecting handsets you no longer need. Over 90 per cent of an old handset can be recycled for new production," says Berit Svendsen, CEO of Telenor Norway.

This voluntary campaign is a cooperative effort between Telenor and The Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports (NIF).

The clubs receive NOK 35 for each handset they collect.
