Telenor to scale down India operations from 13 to 9 circles

Telenor is looking to scale down India operations from 13 circles to 9 as the company struggles to keep afloat given the continuing uncertainty around the spectrum auctions.

The move would lead to a gradual scaling down of operations in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Orissa circles.

The company's network in the circles remains operational and the scaling down of operations in these circles would be gradual. Existing customers would get a 30-day notice before any scaling down of the network begins.

However, the company would not activate new subscribers in the four circles of Kerala, Karnataka, Orissa and Tamil Nadu with immediate effect. It has 6.8 million customers in the region with 46 per cent of these being active users.

The company has around 400 direct employees in the circles and as it gradually scales down, it would evaluate possibilities of relocating some of the employees to other Uninor circles and also provide assistance in securing employment outside the company.

According to the company, it would at the same time, strengthen operations in the other 9 circles of UP East, UP West, Bihar & Jharkhand, Kolkata, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Mumbai, Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat.
