Chennai: Continuing its thrust to utilise the vast network of post offices in the state, the Tamil Nadu postal department has signed an agreement with Veta, an English training academy to sell its home study course books.

Priced at Rs945, Veta's home study course material will be available in all the post offices located in Tamil Nadu.

For the postal department, the volume of unregistered mail has come down in a major way. In order to compensate the revenue loss and also the use the manpower and the large distribution network, the department decided to look at alternate routes for revenue said Radhika Doraiswamy, chief postmaster general, Tamil Nadu.

According to V Rajagopalan, chairman, Veta, business process outsourcing companies are now looking at 'tier 2 and 'tier 3' cities'. As a result the importance of English as a language for communication has assumed importance. "We are looking at similar distribution deals in other states."
