Twitter Inc yesterday said that it has acquired social data provider and its long-standing data partner Gnip in order to make data even more accessible to its customers.

Twitter did not reveal the financial terms of the transaction, but said that Gnip has played a crucial role in collecting and digesting its public data and delivering the most essential tweets to partners.

Founded in 2008 and based in Colorado, Gnip is one of the world's largest providers of social data.

It has delivered more than 2.3 trillion tweets to customers in 42 countries who use those Tweets to provide insights to a multitude of industries including business intelligence, marketing, finance, professional services, and public relations.

Gnip was Twitter's first data partner and the first with access to complete archive of Twitter Data.

It also supplies data to Tumblr, WordPress, Foursquare, Disqus, IntenseDebate, StockTwits, and GetGlue.

''We believe Gnip has only begun to scratch the surface. Together we plan to offer more sophisticated data sets and better data enrichments, so that even more developers and businesses big and small around the world can drive innovation using the unique content that is shared on Twitter,'' said, Jana Messerschmidt, VP, Global Business Development & Platform at Twitter in a blog post.
