Uninor not to levy roaming charges from Maharashtra, Goa users

14 Mar 2013

Uninor, the Indian subsidiary of Norway's Telenor Group, will not levy roaming charges for its subscribers from Maharashtra and Goa when they travel to Mumbai. Additionally, it would also add another 300 network sites to its existing telecom infrastructure in Maharashtra.

The company has entered into an agreement with Tata DoCoMo to ensure that no roaming charges are passed on to Uninor subscribers when they are in Mumbai. All incoming calls will be free, while outgoing calls, whether local or STD will be at the standard 1 paise per second, the company said in a statement.

''Uninor already has spectrum for the next 20 years available in Maharashtra and Goa and we are further investing in our operations here. With free roaming, even subscribers who travel to Mumbai do not need to worry at all about any roaming charges,'' said Ritesh Singh, Circle Business Head for Maharashtra and Goa.

''Uninor will also ensure that tariffs in this circle always remain affordable,'' added Singh.

The GSM operator had closed down its services in Mumbai circle on February 16, 2013, following the Supreme Court that operators who did not win spectrum in the previous auction should shut down operations with immediate effect.

Uninor's pre-paid GSM services are available across Uttar Pradesh (west and east), Bihar (including Jharkhand), Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. Together, these circles account for more than 50 per cent of India's population.
