Vodafone India slashes 3G rates, ends roaming charges

Vodafone India has slashed 3G tariffs by up to 80 percent, making it the fourth telecom service provider to cut prices after Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular and Reliance Communications. Additionally, the GSM operator also announced there will be no additional charge for roaming on data usage.

Vodafone India's 3G plans now start from Rs25 for 25 MB data usage, with  the higher end being at Rs 1,599 for 12 GB data usage. For usage beyond the stipulated data usage on each plan, the customers will be charged at the rate of 2 paise per 10 KB.

''With the introduction of these plans, we aim at establishing a foundation for providing a 3G data plan for everyone, making it affordable to the masses in the country. Also, users who shy away from trying 3G services due to prohibitive costs can now experience services without the fear of a bill shock,'' Sanjoy Mukerji, chief commercial officer, Vodafone India, said.

Under its pay-as-you-go (PAYG) scheme for pre-paid users, the rate has been cut by 80 per cent to 2 paise per 10 kb.

''The PAYG and no additional charges for roaming are the first of its kind in the Indian market. We expect this offer to be well received by the customers as it will act as a strong value proposition for data users,'' he added.

In May, Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular and Reliance Communications had reduced tariffs for 3G high speed internet services, as customer additions were not happening at the expected pace.

The industry is expecting another fall in tariffs, with early signs being visible, however, this might not be as intense as the previous one.
