Volvo recalls 12,798 vehicles in China over fuel leak and airbag fault

26 Mar 2012

Swedish automobile manufacturer Volvo Cars is recalling 12,798 vehicles imported into China, over potential fuel leaks and faulty wiring that could cause airbag failure.

China's quality regulator, General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said on its website that Volvo is recalling 11,119 S60 and XC60 cars of 2012 model year to fix a wire harness under the front seats which might interfere with the car's airbags.

The Gothenburg-based car maker, which is normally known for its high safety standards, is also recalling 1,679 S60 and XC60 cars to check whether the underbody coating might penetrate the fuel lines and cause fuel leakage.

The regulator said that no casualties or deaths have been reported arising from the potential defects. The company said it will offer free checks and repairs for the recalled cars.

Volvo had sold over 200,000 vehicles during the first six months of 2011, so the recall represents less than 10 per cent of its vehicles sold in the country.

Volvo car is owned by the Zhejiang-based Geely Holding Group, which had acquired it in August 2010 from Ford Motor.
