17 May 2016

German carmaker Volkswagen will launch the Ameo, first showcased the in India in February and then at the Auto Expo 2016, in July. Volkswagen has started accepting pre-orders for the upcoming sub-compact sedan from 12 May across the country.

With the Ameo, the German automaker will target not only metro cities, but also customers in the Tier II & III markets. In fact, the automaker believes the car will increase the company's overall production by around 15 per cent this year as compared to 2015.

According to VW, the Ameo has been especially created for the Indian market and will offer best-in-its-class safety features, build quality and driving experience.

Developed at the company's manufacturing facility in Chakan, Maharashtra, it features the highest percentage of localization in comparison with other Volkswagen cars retailed in the country.

One of the last automakers to enter this highly competitive segment, VW will go up against established names such as the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Ford Figo Aspire, Honda Amaze, and Hyundai Xcent.

The Ameo is underpinned by the same platform as the VW Polo and Vento, and will derive power from two engine options: the 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol and 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. For transmission, VW will offer a 5-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG.

The new Volkswagen Ameo will offer a wide array of features including cruise control, rain sensing wipers, static cornering lights, and MirrorLink infotainment system among others. Dual front airbags and ABS will be standard across the entire range.
