A year after Tata Motors exited its Nano car project from Singur in West Bengal, the government is considering setting up a power plant there and has asked Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) to prepare a feasibility study for it.

According to BHEL sources a proposal for a power plant has been received from state-owned psu West Bengal Power Development Corporation Ltd (WBPDCL) about two months ago.

The source said a preliminary visit to Singur had been undertaken and details of the site requisitioned from the government.

According to WBPDCL managing director D Sen, the corporation would submit a report to chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on the power project proposal.

The five member team that visited the 997 acre Tata Nano project site included BHEL GM (marketing) S C Mittal and WBPCL managing director D Sen.

According to Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata, the Tatas would return the lease land if the government compensated it.
