Welcome aboard another ISP, Tata

13 Aug 1999

The house of Tatas is planning to enter the Internet service provider business and has applied for a licence for this purpose. The group is in the process of evaluating the options and is finalising a business plan.

The Tatas are already into basic and cellular telecom services. Initially, the group will offer its ISP services to the corporate sector.

K A Chaukar, managing director of Tata Industries, made the announcement at a conference on the International Technology Park in Bangalore. The Tatas hold a stake of about 47 per cent in this park, which has about 39 companies operating out of it. Over 12 of them are export-oriented units. As many as 17 new international and local companies have signed on in the last few months.

Talking further about the Tata group's infotech business, Mr Chaukar said that the group is in the process of evaluating it but no concrete proposals have been made.
