Wipro introduces desktop virtualisation, WDaaS

27 May 2011

Wipro Technologies has launched Wipro Desktop as a Service (WDaaS), a desktop virtualization solution that delivers desktops, applications and data as an on-demand service.

WDaaS, announced earlier in October 2010 and available in the market now, is an integrated service offering which uses the desktop virtualisation technologies of Citrix and Microsoft. It is based on HP converged infrastructure and provides efficient plug and play desktop and application virtualization capabilities.

For businesses that want to deploy desktop virtualisation on-premises, WDaaS will offer a pre-configured appliance (hardware, software and services) that can be managed remotely by Wipro, leading to lower deployment cost for users.

Moreover, it reduces the implementation time by half as compared to traditional system integration approach.

For enterprises seeking a hosted or cloud offering, Wipro says, ADasS provides desktops and applications as a service from a dedicated private cloud environment in its own datacentres or by leveraging cloud infrastructure providers.

These delivery models lower the total cost of ownership and move the desktop cost from a capital expenditure to an operating model.

"The development of the Wipro Desktop as a Service offering is a good example of the growing take-up of cloud desktops in the market. Interest is growing across the world and especially in the US and the UK, typically initially triggered by server cloud computing and virtualisation overall," says Dominique Raviart, research director, IT outsourcing, at analyst and advisory firm NelsonHall.

Traditionally, desktop virtualisation has been complex to implement as customers seek scalable and highly reliable infrastructure from their solution providers says Neeraj Jaitley, vice president, cloud infrastructure solutions at Wipro Technologies. "Our engagement methodology can reduce the technology deployment cycle by half," he says.
