Workers at Ford Chennai plant angry over incentive cut: Report

There may be trouble ahead for US auto major Ford's plant near Chennai as workers were skipping lunches served at the cafeteria and boycotting company transport for the past few days, protesting a cut in their performance incentive, The Economic Times reported.

At the company's Maramalai Nagar plant, around 60 km from Chennai, the management's move to reduce the workers' incentive by about  10 percentage points over the year-ago period despite increase in output had angered nearly 1,800 workers, ET reports citing employees at the unit who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The plant, set up in 1995, makes models including the Figo, Fiesta, Endeavour and EcoSport, which are sold in India and 40 countries around the world. Ford, with a workforce of 5,000-6000 on the shop floor, is setting up its second plant in Gujarat, which is expected to come on stream next year.
