Yahoo acquires content delivery network PeerCDN

18 Dec 2013

Yahoo has made its 27th acquisition of 2013, by buying PeerCDN, a peer-to-peer content delivery network, according to a blog post posted on PeerCDN's homepage yesterday.

On an average, Yahoo has picked up more than one start up every two weeks!

Though the terms of the deal were not disclosed, it looked like another acqui-hire, as a Yahoo spokesperson told VatorNews that three of the company's engineers had joined its media organisation in Sunnyvale, California.

According to the spokesperson, the team had a solid background in domain expertise and a passion for video that made them a perfect fit for Yahoo.

As for the founders of PeerCDN, Feross Aboukhadijeh, Abi Raja, and John Hiesey, they said they found a partner in Yahoo with the same passion for giving users the best experience possible on the web.

Meanwhile, according to a report by VentureBeat, startup PeerCDN today announced its acquisition by Yahoo for an undisclosed sum. PeerCDN, an attractive prospect for Yahoo, claims to make websites faster with lower costs of bandwidth.

PeerCDN was still in private beta when at the time of its acquisition, and according to its owners description, it was a peer-to-peer content delivery network built with an open source project called WebRTC aimed at improving speeds and ensuring that websites could handle an influx of high traffic, the report said.

Under chief, Marissa Mayer, Yahoo aims to offer rich media content which requires ample bandwidth. According to VentureBeat, the PeerCDN team would likely get teamwork on bolstering its communications and networking efforts.

Meanwhile, the Stanford engineering alumni who founded the company have joined the Yahoo office in Sunnyvale, California, according to the report.
