DoT favours TRAI''s recommendations on 3G spectrum allocation

06 Nov 2006

Mumbai: The department of telecom (DoT) is going ahead with the recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on auctioning 3G spectrum with a reserve base price.

The next generation 3G mobile services will enable operators provide seamless services for applications like internet browsing, mobile TV, e-mails, video streaming etc.

Amid reports of a possible delay in release of spectrum by the defence forces, DoT is quite positive to the recommendations submitted by the telecom regulator on the auction of 3G spectrum, sources said.

Cellular operators, meanwhile, are opposed to implementing TRAI's current recommendations, which they consider as a return to the earlier licensing regime when telecom companies bid higher for licences.

A panel of expert s, which is currently working on finalising the allocation of 3G-spectrum policy for telecom companies, is expected to come up with its findings on 3G allocation and pricing by the year-end.
