IIT-Bombay, IISc-Bangalore among top 10 BRICS universities

The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, have made it to the top 10 of the Quacquarelli Symonds BRICS University Rankings 2018. IIT-Bombay has been ranked ninth and IISc-Bangalore is at the tenth position.

Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, University of Science and Technology of China, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Nanjing University take up the top eight positions from a selection of 300 universities from India, China, Russia, South Africa and Brazil.

Founded in 1911, China's Tsinghua University is a public research university which is consistently ranked as one of the best universities in China.

The university currently has 14 schools and 56 departments. It has faculties in science, engineering, humanities, law, medicine, history, philosophy, economics, management, education and art. The university is known for fostering talent and scientific research, with 149 key research institutes, including 13 key state laboratories. Tsinghua's campus, located in northwest Beijing, has been featured among the most beautiful in the world.

Seven out of the top 10 universities are from China, while 2 are from India and 1 is from Russia.

IIT Roorkee has been ranked at 51 among the best universities in BRICS nations.  IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Guwahati are some of the top universities from India to feature on the list.

Among private varsities from India, BITS Pilani, Thapar University, Symbiosis International University and OP Jindal Global University have made it to the list.

The BRICS university ranking has been compiled using eight different indicators, including the ratio of faculty to students, the proportion of academic staff with a PhD and the institution's reputation among academics and employers.

The other IITs, including those in Delhi, Madras and Kharagpur are also among the top 25 universities, although the top 25 ranks are dominated by Chinese universities, including the first four ranks.

China's Tsinghua University tops the list, followed by Peking University.

IIT-Roorkee is ranked 51st, followed by IIT-Gauhati at 52nd. Calcutta University is at the 64th position, Jadavpur University at the 74th, Chennai's Anna University at 85th and IIT-Hyderabad at the 100th spot in the rankings.

The Quacquarelli Symonds Asia University Rankings 2018 were released in October, with nine Indian universities in the top 100, but none in the top 10. In the QS World University Rankings 2018, IIT-Delhi was India's best university with a rank of 159.

The year's ranking of 300 universities, ranked on several parameters – academic reputation, employer reputation, international students, faculty staff with PhD, faculty-student ratio, papers per faculty among others.
