No more “up to” business in advertising broadband: TRAI to ISPs

New Delhi: Even as the demand for faster broadband speeds of 2 Mbps or more, in a status paper the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has said that real-time applications, involving video and multimedia, will require much higher bandwidth.

Looking at advertising by internet service providers (ISPs), TRAI has pointed out that numerous ISPs conveniently use the word `up to' in their advertising of broadband plans, while not indicating any committed minimum speed.

TRAI has asked internet service providers (ISPs) to remove the word `up to' from tariff plans, and clearly mention the associated minimum download speed of the plan.

According to the regulator, all ISPs have acknowledged its request, and would be taking action to comply with its fiat.

Reports suggest numerous stakeholders are unhappy with the present definition of broadband speed in India, terming it as 'conservative' compared to other countries.
