Swiss seeds and pesticides giant Syngenta AG has teamed up with the Government of India to launch the Second Green Revolution in India. Syngenta India Ltd, the Indian arm of the global seeds and crop protection major, on Monday announced the launch of the `Green Revolution in Eastern States (GRES)'.

The project aims at increasing rice production through hybrid paddy seeds and integrated pest management.

GRES, kicked off during the kharif season, currently covers 20 villages in Burdwan and Hooghly districts of West Bengal.

The project will educate farmers in the use of better and high-yielding seeds and pest management in rice cultivation, in order to raise output.

Farmers will be trained in the use of new technology in rice cultivation, including the use of hybrid rice varieties, application of nutrients and identification of pests and diseases.

The GRES project will see Syngenta partnering with CropLife India besides the agriculture departments of the state and central governments. The current project will have a duration of three years.
