India plans to set up energy efficiency targets for over 700 industries that account for more than 40 per cent of the country's fossil fuel use by the end of next year, reports quoted the head of Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) Ajay Mathur as saying.

Energy efficiency, is focus area of the country's climate change policy and target setting for energy-intensive industries will be instrumental in evolving a national trading scheme based on energy efficiency certificates, the report said.

The national energy efficiency plan, approved last month, is expected to help in saving 5 per cent of annual fossil fuel use by 2015.

The scheme is one of a number of emissions reduction measures that could strengthen India's position at the  Copenhagen meet on climate action slated for the end of the year.

Mathur said 714 energy-intensive industrial operations have been identified across nine sectors, including power and cement that would be monitored on efficient use of energy.

He added that all industrial units within a particular energy efficiency band would get the same target with the more efficient units being given lower targets and the less efficient units getting higher targets.
