Large listed companies in the UK will be required to publish full details of their greenhouse gas emissions under plans announced by deputy prime minister Nick Clegg and welcomed by environmentalists.

However, the plans have led to concerns among businesses over the additional administrative burden on companies.

Executives have been complaining already, about having to report emissions under other schemes such as the Climate Change Act and the European emissions trading scheme.

However, the plan has received the backing of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) on grounds that it would introduce a standard measure to compare different companies' performance.

The plans would likely affect around 1,800 companies listed on the London Stock Exchange who would have to report their emissions from April next year.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (Bis) and the Treasury are locked in a tussle over the issue.
