Swiss banks flush with Indian money: Assange

26 Apr 2011

"There is more Indian money in Swiss banks than any other nationality," according to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange but a nonchalant government in India continues to dilly-dally on the issue of bringing back black money stashed by politicians and corporate crooks in banks in tax haven countries.

Revealing this in an interview to a private news channel, Assange claimed to have access to details of the Swiss bank accounts of Indian nationals who have stashed away foreign currency in Swiss banks across the world.

"Yes, there are Indian names in the list," he said.

Assange wondered how the Indian authorities remain unconcerned over trillions of dollars worth of black money stashed away in banks in foreign locations.

Such money, which has a cascading effect on the Indian economy and has the power to neutralise or fail government and central bank policies needed to be checked at the earliest, he stressed.

"The Indian government needs to be more aggressive in tracking the black money stashed in foreign banks since Indians depositing money in foreign banks is debasing the rupee," he pointed out.
