Eight Indian companies in Fortune 500 list

Eight Indian companies have made it to Fortune magazine's 2012 list of the world's 500 largest companies where US companies have the highest haul of top-rated companies.

With annual revenue of $86,016 million Indian Oil Corporation has been placed in the 83rd spot and Reliance Industries with an annual revenue of $76,119 million is 99th among the top 100 in the list compiled by Fortune magazine.

RIL, however, has improved its ranking to 99 from previous year's 134.

Besides IOC and RIL, the other Indian companies in the list are two Tata group companies - Tata Steel and Tata Motors - oil marketing PSUs Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum and oil exploration company Oil & Natural Gas, followed by the sector State Bank of India.

Bharat Petroleum had revenues of $44,582 million, followed by Hindustan Petroleum ($38,885 million), SBI ($36,950 million), Tata Motors ($34,575 million), ONGC ($30,746 million) and Tata Steel ($27,739 million.)

Out of the eight Indian entries, five are state-run entities. The 2011 list also had featured the same eight Indian companies.
