2G scam: CBI chief to appear before PAC today

15 Feb 2011

The director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), AP Singh, is due to appear before the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) today to present evidence collected in connection with the controversial allocation of 2G spectrum by the former telecom minster Andimuthu Raja.

According to a government audit body, the Comptroller & Auditor General, the ex-minister, currently in custody of the CBI, caused a notional loss of Rs1.76 lakh crore to the national exchequer by selling spectrum cheap to favoured companies in 2008.

Under huge pressure for non-performance, the agency is now investigating the 2G scam.

Two weeks ago, the CBI arrested ex-minister, A Raja and two of his close aides, RK Chandolia and Siddharth Behura.

Also arrested earlier this month was Shahid Usman Balwa, co-promoter of DB Realty, which has been implicated in the scam by the CBI.

Balwa's DB Realty floated Swan Telecom, which Raja allegedly favoured in spectrum allocation.
