Akhilesh Yadav sworn in as UP chief minister

15 Mar 2012

Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav was today sworn in as the 33rd chief minister of UP, and at 38, the state's youngest. The venue of the swearing in ceremony  was the sprawling La Martiniere College grounds in Lucknow, that  been readied for the event, held  at 11:30 am.

Yadav, the son of Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav,  had at the outset admitted that the process of cabinet formation would "not be an easy one" given the excitement and aspirations of the people and party workers.

He said yesterday that the realisation of the difficult task of cabinet formation occurred to him while he was finalising the names. He added he was attempting to walk the middle path.

"There are so much expectations, hopes and responsibilities, it is a test for me," he had told reporters.

"My efforts are to make a small, compact cabinet with a mix of the old and experienced and fresh blood," he said.

"The ministry will not be too big but I am sure, if need be, many could be sworn in later and the ministry could be expanded once the need arises," he added.
