Dara Singh, the original action hero, dies of cardiac arrest

Dara SinghWrestler-turned-actor Dara Singh passed away in the early hours on Thursday. Dara Singh, who was critically ill following a cardiac arrest, breathed his last at his Juhu home.

Dara Singh, 84, was shifted from Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital to his Juhu home late on Wednesday. His funeral was held at 2 pm on Thursday.

Dara Singh, who was on ventilators and support systems was shifted with nurses and doctors to his home on the family's wish that he should be at home in the last stages.

Dara Singh will always be remembered for one of the most exciting fights in the history of wrestling competitions when the 130-kg wrestler humiliated the then reigning world champion King Kong by lifting the 200kg Australian and spinned him over his head.

King Kong is reported to have yelled at the referee saying that this was not in the rules of the game.

His last bout was in 1983 in Delhi, where he announced his retirement as a wrestler. The then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi inaugurated the tournament and the winning trophy was presented by Giani Zail Singh.
