Delhi gang-rape: Protesters return to Jantar Mantar

16 Jan 2013

A month after the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old para-medical student in the national capital on 16 December led to a unprecedented wave of protest in Delhi and across the country, protesters are back at Jantar Mantar holding candlelight march.

A number of people, including medical students, residents and nurses of Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC), All-India Institute of Medical Science and Maulana Azad Medical College, gathered at Jantar Mantar in the evening for a candlelight vigil to mark one month of the gruesome gang-rape and assault.

People holding lit candles marched towards Parliament Street but were prevented from moving beyond Jantar Mantar to VMMC and to the Prime Minister's residence at 7, Race Course Road.

Activist Kiran Bedi, who was also present at the function, said there is a need for citizen-social audit of systems.

Students and activists have given a call for a large-scale gathering at Jantar Mantar demanding stricter punishment of the guilty amidst signs that the police and the judiciary are loosening grip on the marauders.

There were reports that at least one of the six-member gang will escape severe punishment claiming he is a juvenile, backed by his school records.
