HCL’s Shiv Nadar is the most generous Indian: Hurun

HCL founder and chairman Shiv Nadar is the most generous Indian, with a donation of Rs630 crore for philanthropic causes, while Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan and wife Sudha Gopalakrishnan came in second with a donation of Rs313 crore.

Nadar makes donations to various charitable activities through Shiv Nadar Foundation, out of which Rs458 crore was spent on infrastructure projects such as building for additional capacity creation for Shiv Nadar University.

Gopalakrishnan and wife Sudha make donations through their trust - The Pratiksha Trust - which includes projects in education, healthcare, research and entrepreneurship. They also provide scholarships to medical and engineering students and monthly pensions to senior citizens.

India's richest man Mukesh Ambani, also the chairman of Reliance Industries, came in third with a donation of Rs303 crore towards causes such as education, rural development, sports, health and Swach Bharat, according to the Hurun India Philanthropy List 2016.

The list, which ranks the most generous individuals from India, 2106 list has 27 individuals, down 9 from last year. With 10 individuals, Mumbai is home to most of the Hurun philanthropists, followed by Bengaluru and Delhi.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, CMD of Biocon and the only self-made woman entrepreneur in the list, donated Rs45 crore to healthcare, education and social development. Piramal Enterprises chairman Ajay Piramal donated Rs111 crore towards education, healthcare rural development and women empowerment.

Accounting for 35 per cent of the donations, education remains the most favored philanthropic cause.

With a donation of Rs21 crore, Aditya Birla Group chairman Kumarmangalam Birla is the youngest philanthropist in the list; eldest being Pallonji Mistry of Shapoorji Pallonji Group who contributed Rs68 crore.

With nine dropouts from the list, Indian philanthropy is at Rs2,334 crore, with an average donation per philanthropist being Rs86 crore. There were only two women philanthropists compared with four last year.
