Lakshmi Mittal tops `Asian Rich List 2010' in UK

Lakshmi Mittal, NRI owner of the world's largest steel company ArcelorMittal, with an estimated wealth of 17 billion pounds, is the richest Asian in Britain for the year 2010, according to a ranking by news magazine `Eastern Eye.'

Mittal continues to top UK's Asian Rich List for the 10th year in succession, according is in Eastern Eye, a publication brought out by the Asian Media & Marketing Group.

"Mittal's rise sometimes obscured the fact that he has been one of the most enterprising figures of "our age", and no episode perhaps better reflected this than his takeover of European steel giant Arcelor," the magazine said.

Mittal, 59, is followed by the Hinduja brothers -  Srichand and Gopichand - with 8 billion pounds, Anil Agarwal of mining group Vedanta Resources with 4 billion pounds, Sir Anwar Pervez of Bestways with 715 million pounds and NRI industrialist Swraj Paul of Caparo with 510 million pounds.

At a function to mark the release of the rich list, the Hinduja brothers were also presented with a 'Lifetime Achievement Award' for their outstanding achievements in various spheres of life.

ArcelorMittal, which reported revenues of $124.9 billion and crude steel production of 103.3 million tonnes (10 per cent of world steel output) in 2008, saw its revenues dip to $65.1 billion in 2009. Crude steel production also fell to 73.2 million tonnes (8 per cent of world output) in 2009.
